Consumer alert for Amazon

When you think you have found a hot deal on Amazon, be sure to look at the details.  Also, even if you want to cut down on packaging, sometimes it’s best to have Amazon ship in their packaging so your items are secure.

So, I ordered tonic water a while back.  The title said “10 pack” but the 10 pack “of” ounces was a 1/10th of the bottle ounces.  What did I receive?  ONE big bottle.  I was expecting 10 small bottles.  Unfortunately, I do not  have screenshots of that one.

This is the same as what is going on with the corn meal that I bought (and luckily cancelled before it shipped).  By now, I should know better.

Goya Masarepa on Amazon

You can see the title says 35.2 oz and the picture shows a 10 pack.  But the details are a little different – “3.52 ounce (pack of 10).  So, what you are getting is one 35.2 ounce bag.  Look closely at the bag … it’s 35.2 oz.  After realizing this, I cancelled my order.  I also decided to read the reviews and I guess others were duped too.

There are sometimes really good deals out there, but sadly this is happening more and more … and Amazon says it cannot be returned (because it is food).  In fact, if you message them they will tell you that and try to end the conversation.  Keep pressing them until you actually get an associate to help you.

Here is the link to message or call Amazon if you have a problem … even with food items.  I see comments all the time on Amazon that people say that their item was leaking or broken just to be told it’s not returnable because it’s food.  As I said, keep at it until you get a real person.  There is no reason we should accept to pay for something that isn’t useable.

I have dropped my affiliation with Amazon because they have too many rules about what affiliates can say and post.  And, I prefer to inform consumers about issues that they may want to avoid.

Also, when it comes to Amazon packaging … it’s hit or miss on how it’s packed.  Sometimes it’s a big box with a small item loose, sometimes things like curtains ship in their clear plastic packaging, and sometimes something that seems unbreakable is packed with great care.  You just never know.

Even though I agree with less packaging, it’s not always better to accept it.  Some items you will see at checkout “this item usually ships in manufacturer packaging”.  Then the box next to it says “ship in Amazon packaging”.  Because I didn’t want all that packaging to have to dispose of, I used to just accept that the manufacturer packaging would be sufficient.  This is not always the case.

The curtains that I ordered were in their regular packaging and some looked like they slipped under the wheel of the delivery vehicle.  Others were sent back by the carrier for damaged product.  If you actually want your order and want it to be useable … consider this.  I do not mind if my coffee pods are shipped in the manufacturer box, because I know that the ones I order are in a sturdy box.  Otherwise, if I don’t know … I choose to tick the box “ship in Amazon packaging”.

And, one last thing … ALWAYS look at the lower star reviews.  This could save you from aggravation in the long run.

I hope this helps.

Happy shopping!
