Dollar General app showing $0.00

First off, I want to say that Penny Puss is the leader in responsible penny shopping and we have no affiliation with Dollar General.  We do try to give out accurate information, and will never try to mislead you.  We also respect the store employees and never want to make extra work for them.

So, with that said, I have seen a LOT of posts about people filling their carts with items that show in the Dollar General app as $0.00.  So, you ask, “what does it mean when something scans for $0.00 in the Dollar General app?”

My answer:  It means literally NOTHING.  While Dollar General does sell items for a penny, they DO NOT sell items for nothing.  When something shows $0.00 in the app, it could mean out of stock, clearance, or a penny item.  I know it’s aggravating, but it is just a glitch in the system.  I do hope  that they get it fixed soon.

When you are shopping with the Dollar General app, first off, you must have your store set to the correct location to show the prices in that store.  Store prices do vary.

If an item is a penny item, it will show $0.01.

Also, Dollar General has updated their terms and conditions on using their app.  The price at the register is the price you will pay if there is a difference between the app and the register.  I was actually approached by an employee that knows I am a penny shopper.  She told me that just because the app shows a penny, it does not mean it will be a penny at the register.  She was just giving me a “heads up” on what she was told.  There may be changes coming.

So, what does the future of penny shopping look like?  We really don’t know.  We have been told for years that penny shopping was going to end.  I started blogging about it back in 2014 … we will just have to wait and see.

And, a quick reminder, if you take items to the register and they do not ring up like you had expected and you no longer want them, please put them back.  Do not make extra work for the employees of the stores.

Happy shopping!
