Kellogg’s CEO says to eat cereal for dinner for struggling families.

Did you see in the news where the CEO of Kellogg’s suggests eating cereal for dinner for those who are struggling financially with food cost.

I don’t know … have YOU seen the price of cereal lately?

Honestly, cereal has always been an option for a quick meal, but I don’t really like cereal very much.  There are many other ways to get an inexpensive meal.  And many ways to have an actual warm meal cheap.  It’s cold outside, who wants cold cereal for dinner.

So, here are some other options:

  • Soup over rice or noodles
  • Beans and rice
  • Warm rice and raisins with milk (we used to eat this when I was a kid)
  • Spaghetti – You can make without meat to save money.
  • Fried cabbage and noodles
  • Egg sandwich
  • Baked beans w/ hot dog slices
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Tuna macaroni salad (I love cold tuna macaroni)
  • Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
  • Oatmeal – you can add nuts and fruit if you have it too!
  • Make soup from leftover meat and veggies
  • And there are always ramen noodles – you can add to it also.

Dry beans, peas, and lentils are inexpensive foods that can be the base to a warm filling meal.  Cooking from scratch (if you have time) can save a bunch.

Chicken thighs and legs are pretty reasonable usually.  If you cannot afford a whole portion per person, you can always cut it up and add it to your grains or legumes.

How do you feel about this CEO?  I feel like he is out of touch.  All these big businesses raking in more money than ever and telling us to just deal with it.

Also, cereal may be okay for some people, but much of it is sugar-laden and very high in carbs which is not really “healthy” if you have certain medical conditions.

I realize that many of us use coupons and get great deals, but some people do not have time or cannot get out to chase deals.

I’d love to  hear suggestions on what you consider a well-rounded meal on a strict budget.
