Propane – how to get more and pay less!
My husband gets his propane tank refilled at Tractor Supply because he says that it is cheaper than exchanging a tank at most other retailers. I wonder how many people even know this. I didn’t.
I looked on the Tractor Supply website to see how much they charge for propane. While it is convenient to just exchange your tank, you can save quite a bit by going to a retailer that fills your tank and prices it by the gallon.
$3.65 a gallon for propane at Tractor Supply
To refill a 20 lb tank that is completely empty at Tractor Supply would cost approximately $17.38.
- a gallon of propane weighs approx 4.2 lbs
- approx 4.76 gallons will fit in a 20 lb tank
If you purchase an “exchange” tank at Dollar General, the ad this week shows $20, but the tank you are exchanging it for has only 15 lbs of propane (3.57 gallons). The price per gallons is then $5.60!
Prices may vary over time, but right at this time, the prices differ by $1.90 per gallon of propane between purchasing at Tractor Supply and Dollar General! I’m sure you will agree that $3.65 a gallon is a much better deal. You are actually paying more for less if you exchange the tank instead of having yours filled!
There are other retailers who charge by the gallon too. I just called our local Ace Hardware store and they only charge $3.35 per gallon! Unfortunately, Tractor Supply is much closer and it would cost more than the money saved for me to go to Ace. But, it is an option if you have one close by.
Kelly said that you can get your propane refilled at Uhaul too. (Thank you.)
