DG Clearance Event – Day 1 (upcoming remodel store)

Today was the first day of the Dollar General clearance event and I did a lot better than expected!  But this is because we have so many surprise pennies being found, and I found an upcoming remodel that had much better deals than I expected.

So, first, I’ll touch on the clearance event.  I’ve posted about it a couple of times so we could all get ready and know what will be included.  I was really hoping for some holiday storage that was 70% off already … but it looks pretty much sold out in my local area.  I did grab 2 tree bags that were originally $8 each for only 72¢ each, if I remember correctly.  They were already 70% off and this store had an extra 70% off.

This particular store also happens to be a store that will be remodeling soon.  A lot of food items have been 50% off for a while now.  I scanned them in the app and they still showed 50% off … not 50% and the extra 70%, so I passed on those items and focused on coupon items from regular clearance that had the extra 70% off.

Let me take a step back.  Maybe some of you don’t know what a remodel is.  It’s a store that is going to remodel and different items are marked down.  So, anyway, I had a little bit of overage with my couponing today and grabbed a regularly $1 item that scanned the 50% off in the Dollar General app.  Well, to my surprise, the register rang it at 15¢ instead of the 50¢.  I grabbed 3 packs of 3¢ candy canes because my total ended up being negative 8¢.  So I ended up paying a penny out of pocket.

Not all Dollar General registers will allow overage.  They are working on changing to not allow it.  But if you do get overage, you  must find something to cover it as they are not allowed to give cash back.

If you are not a Dollar General shopper, you might think all this penny stuff is crazy, but it’s true crazy.

Here are my “remodel only” 50% off + 70% off clearance event items.  The $1 items like the coffee sticks, creamer, saltines, and breakfast biscuits cost 15¢ each.  The Clover Valley cereal was 29¢ each and the Malt O Meal cereal was 58¢ a bag.  I do wish I would have caught this sooner as most of the food items were gone by the time I realized the app wasn’t showing the same price as the register.

Again, these foods will NOT be included in the clearance event in your regular stores.  I am pointing this out so that you know to take an item to the register (during this clearance event) if you have a remodel markdown store to see if the price is actually better than what the Dollar General app says.

I have added a bunch of the new penny items to the Penny Puss app with DG Penny Finder.  I am also still working on adding the dime holiday items.

As you are probably aware by now, the Dollar General app no longer shows 1¢ for penny items – it now shows 0.00 – and that could mean it’s a penny, but it might just mean it’s out of stock.  If the Dollar General app shows a price, you do know that it is not a penny item though.  That is the first step.

I have been trying to add the items to our Facebook group, but I probably will not get a post up on the site here until tomorrow.  I’m beat!
