Filet Mignon on a Budget – buy this instead!

So, we all know that filet mignon is quite pricey, and it is most likely not something most of us buy very often, if at all.  But, know that you CAN enjoy it at a reduced price.  If this interests you, read on!

I am not sure how you all are, but I do a LOT of researching and verifying and checking things.  If I don’t know something – I want to know it.  Well, except for how to use the DVD player … but I can’t know everything.

Anyway, in searching for a “budget” beef recipe (that wouldn’t be a whole steak per person) to include in my Winter Solstice lobster tail dinner this past December, I came across what they called “filet mignon tails”.  I had to know more.  Winter Solstice is the big holiday that I host for my family each year and it has to be special.  Anyway, I tracked down this filet mignon tail that my Giant Eagle actually labels “tips”.  I decided to purchase prior to the big dinner to test it.  Mr. Penny Puss enjoyed it!  I have never really been fond of steak, but I do agree that it is tender, even when pan fried.

I actually didn’t end up making it for my Solstice dinner (even at a reduced price, it’s still pricey), but I went to look for it again recently and found a really nice one.

The price at my local Giant Eagle is $10 less per pound for the filet mignon tips than filet mignon steak!  If you can find one, you can just slice it carefully into medallions.  My local store doesn’t always have it and sometimes they are a bit “scraggly” … so just be forewarned.

This post may not be for you, but it is a good way to have an “expensive” meal on a budget.  We don’t really go out to dinner for special occasions.  I mostly just cook at home.

Happy shopping … and happy eating!
