Mung Bean Sprout and Aerogarden growing.

I’ve been slacking a lot on growing my vegetables at  home.  I have a few pounds of mung beans that I need to grow into sprouts (although they still seem quite viable even though they are probably at least a year old).  I use a canning jar with a sprout lid I bought on Amazon. I keep the jar in the cupboard to keep the sprouts from getting contaminated. I do like the handle on this lid.

Although I buy in bulk, you can buy smaller quantities of seeds and the return on your money is amazing!  Just 2 tablespoons will almost fill this jar when they are grown out in a week or less!

I bought my seeds in bulk from Mumm’s in Canada.  They are organic.  They offer free shipping on orders over $100.  You can visit them at sprouting.com.  I buy not only my mung beans for sprouting, but also speckled peas and other various seeds for microgreens.

It looks like the sprouting lid that I bought is no longer available, but this one seems similar: 6 pack Plastic Sprouting Lid

Although I have posted about it before, pea microgreens are the easiest ever to grow!  I use vermiculite as the growing medium.  Wet it and put the peas down in a single layer then cover with a bit more vermiculite and wet the top.  I also place a second container on top w/ a bottle to keep it compressed so the peas are strong.  Spritz daily.  They are ready to eat in about 10 days.

I do not have any of these growing right now, but I really should.  They are FAST greens.  No buying salad that is bad within days from the grocery store.

Also, I can’t be the only one who doesn’t want to harvest because the leaves look so pretty on my greens!!! 🙃

The collards (left Aerogarden unit) are Organic Hen Peck Collards from Fruition Seeds. They have an excellent germination rate too.

On the right, I have kale, arugula, onions that are cut and replanted from the store, and a couple of turnips … one turnip is now getting ready to flower. I am thinking about taking the turnips out and replacing with something more productive. Onions will probably stay since they don’t take much room.

I also bought a few sweet potatoes at the store to try to grow slips for planting this year.

I try to buy as much organic as possible to avoid pesticide and herbicide contamination, but occasionally it’s not possible due to availability.

I started my 3rd Aerogarden in my home office just a few days ago. The dill (seeds from my own garden) are coming up in the middle two pods and then mesclun mix lettuce in the others.

I’d love to have a larger hydroponic unit in my house, but right now it’s not in my budget.  Maybe next winter.

Soon it will be time to change out the tops on these Aerogardens and get my plants started for outdoors.

I seem to have a lot more luck starting in these:

The plants seem to grow a lot faster too.

Happy growing!
